SOLARIS CUP: BEST SUNSCREEN STICK FOR SAILING? TESTING SPF 50+ IN REAL MEDITERRANEAN CONDITIONS

SOLARIS CUP: BEST SUNSCREEN STICK FOR SAILING? TESTING SPF 50+ IN REAL MEDITERRANEAN CONDITIONS

Every product tells a story. Ours begins where the sun, wind and saltwater constantly challenge your skin. This Mediterranean summer, Buran SPF 50+, our invisible reef-safe sunscreen stick, was tested exactly where it was designed to perform: during the Solaris Cup in Sardinia. For three consecutive days we observed how sailors used the product before, during and after long hours at sea, collecting feedback directly from crews exposed to intense UV radiation, wind, salt and continuous water reflection.

Why sailing is harder on your skin than most people think?

Many people underestimate UV exposure while sailing. Direct sunlight is only part of the problem. Water reflects UV rays back onto the face, increasing cumulative exposure, while wind, salt and continuous movement dry the skin and make frequent reapplication essential. Long regattas can easily mean several hours under uninterrupted solar exposure.

How our sailors used Buran SPF 50+
The crews naturally developed a routine that proved extremely effective.

  • First application around 8:00 AM, while preparing the boats.
  • Second application just before leaving the harbour around 12:00 PM.
  • Some experienced sailors reapplied during the regatta, especially during races lasting more than two or three hours.

This confirmed one of the most important principles of effective sun protection: no sunscreen performs at its best without proper reapplication. Performance during the regatta.

The objective was simple: could an invisible sunscreen stick remain comfortable during real sailing conditions?

Throughout the races Buran remained:

  • Invisible on the skin.
  • Comfortable under intense wind.
  • Stable despite sweat and water spray.
  • Easy to reapply without using hands.
  • Free from eye irritation when sweating.

Several sailors told us they almost forgot they were wearing sunscreen, yet appreciated having reliable protection available throughout the race. For outdoor athletes, this matters. If protection is uncomfortable, people stop using it. Reef-safe protection for the sea we sail. Sailing creates a direct connection with the marine environment. For that reason Buran was developed as a reef-safe mineral sunscreen stick, respecting marine ecosystems while delivering high-performance SPF 50+ protection. Protecting your skin should never come at the expense of protecting the oceans. Lessons from three days of real testing. Our biggest takeaway was not about the product. It was about behaviour. The most protected sailors weren’t necessarily those who applied the most sunscreen.

They were those who:

  • Wore hats whenever possible.
  • Used quality sunglasses.
  • Reapplied sunscreen regularly.
  • Stayed consistent throughout the day.

Good skincare is never one single product. It is a routine. Why real-world testing matters. At Indoor Outdoor, laboratory testing is only the beginning. Every product is developed to perform in real environments where people actually live, work and compete. Mountains. Ocean. Desert. Snow. Urban environments. These are the places that define our formulations. Because performance skincare should be tested where performance actually happens.

Buran SPF 50+ was created for exactly these conditions. Invisible when applied. Reliable when needed. Built for the body in motion.
